On Linux, updating goes through this page
On macOS and Windows the system verifies the signature of what the program downloads, so an automatic update means something. On Linux it does not: an AppImage carries no verifiable signature, and the only thing left to compare is a checksum fetched from the same place as the file, which is not a verification: it is the same sentence said twice.
So on Linux the program installs nothing by itself. It tells you a new version exists and points you here, and here you download it yourself. It is more work, and it is the only honest shape this can have until there is a detached signature with a key that does not live where the file lives.
